Rage is a stacking combat mechanic used primarily by melee-focused passive tree builds.
At its base, each point of Rage grants:
- +1% melee damage
- +1% ranged damage
- Your base maximum Rage is 20.
- Rage does not build automatically by default.
- Rage must be enabled and generated by passive tree effects, most notably Add Rage.
- When Rage is not being refreshed, it begins to decay after roughly 1 second.
- Once decay starts, Rage rapidly falls toward 0 until refreshed again.
The in-game Rage Stacks buff displays your current stack count and reminds you that each stack increases melee and ranged damage.
The core Rage-enabling passive is Add Rage.
When you have Add Rage allocated, hitting an enemy grants Rage stacks based on the total value of that passive on your tree.
Without a Rage-generating passive, you effectively will not maintain Rage in normal play.
Rage only has two built-in effects in the base system:
- +1% melee damage per Rage
- +1% ranged damage per Rage
Example values at the default cap:
- 5 Rage = +5% melee damage and +5% ranged damage
- 10 Rage = +10% melee damage and +10% ranged damage
- 20 Rage = +20% melee damage and +20% ranged damage
¶ Passives and masteries that scale Rage
The passive tree adds several modifiers that make Rage more valuable:
- Add Max Rage: increases your Rage cap above 20
- Slower Rage Decay: increases how long Rage is held before it starts fading
- Rage Critical Strike Chance: grants critical strike chance per Rage stack
- Raging Resistance: grants damage reduction while you have at least 1 Rage
There are also Rage-focused melee masteries:
- Burning Rage: grants max health per Rage stack, and at maximum Rage grants 100% fire damage conversion
- Furious Siphon: at maximum Rage, melee and ranged hits siphon life
- Raging Speed: grants attack speed per Rage stack, and at maximum Rage gives hits a chance to apply twice
Path of Terraria also has a separate buff called Berserk that comes from the melee skill internally named RageBuff.
That buff is not the same thing as the Rage stack mechanic described on this page.
In other words:
- Rage = a stack-based passive-tree combat resource
- Berserk = a temporary melee skill buff
